Years in Science Education
COORDINATOR,
MASTER OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES - MIDDLE GRADES SCIENCE:
At
The George Washington University, Washington DC, Dr.
Wright teaches in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development.
He has taught
TRED
247 (Teaching Science in Secondary Schools), and currently teaches TRED 206 (Teaching and
Learning I) and TRED 220 (Special Topics: Assessing Student
Understanding in Middle Grades Science). He supervises teacher interns in mathematics and science
education, and he coordinates a grant-funded program that involves the
DC Public Schools, the University, and the American Association for the
Advancement of Science.
CURRICULUM DEVELOPER: Dr.
Wright is founder and director of the Event-Based
Science Project. This NSF funded,
science curriculum project, was hailed by NSF director Walter Massey as
“...a prototype for the nation.”
EDUCATION CONSULTANT/ADVISOR: Dr.
Wright provides consulting and advisory services on science education,
science curriculum, science assessment, and science and mathematics
teacher recruitment.
STATE SCIENCE SUPERVISOR: From
1986 through 1989, Dr. Wright served as a science supervisor for the
Maryland State Department of Education.
AUTHOR and SPEAKER: Dr.
Wright has published 10 peer-reviewed articles, 2 chapters, and 38
modules (50-60 page books) on science and education topics. He has also
given over 400 presentations at national, state, and local meetings, and
appeared on nationwide TV broadcasts.
PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER: Montgomery
County (Maryland) Public Schools. Dr. Wright retired from MCPS after 32
years. While there he taught the following science content: earth
science, chemistry, physics, and biology.
GRANTS, AWARDS, and RECOGNITION: Dr.
Wright has written proposals and obtained grants from the National
Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration. Awards totaling $2.25 million supported his
curriculum development work in Event-Based Science®.
In 1997, the
Maryland Association of Science Teachers presented to Dr. Wright its
1997 Outstanding Science Supervisor award. In 2001, the U.S. Department
of Education selected Event-Based Science® for
special recognition as a promising
science program.
